The innovative use of the three Steppenwolf performance spaces provides exciting artistic opportunities for Steppenwolf.

The Steppenwolf Downstairs Theater presents world premiere productions and fresh interpretations of classic and contemporary plays in its state-of-the-art 515-seat theater.

The 1700 Theater is a cabaret-style, flexible 80-seat space dedicated to showcasing the work of our ensemble and emerging local companies. The 1700 Theater is also home to LookOut, our performance series presenting a wide variety of genres and shows, from dance to live music to spoken word and beyond.

The newest space is our intimate, 400-seat Ensemble Theater in Honor of Helen Zell, which is only six rows deep and places no audience member more than 20 feet from stage. The Ensemble Theater replaces the Upstairs Theater and will be the only in-the-round theater of its kind space found in Chicago.
